The Toyota Sera debuted in 1987 as a concept car with a glass roof canopy and doors. These bold design elements were approved for production in 1990, keeping its most notable features such as its butterfly doors that opened along pillar that held the windshield, and a rear hatch constructed from a single piece of glass. Formula 1 designer Gordon Murray stated that he drew direct inspiration from the Sera's butterfly doors when he designed the McLaren F1 supercar.
