Also known as the MR-S in Japan, the MR2 Spyder in the US, and the MR2 Roadster in Europe, the third generation MR2 took a different design approach from the previous model by focusing on reducing weight over increasing power. To achieve this, it was also the first in the series to be a convertible. Despite its weaker engine, weighing less than a ton allowed it to reach a similar speeds and acceleration times to its predecessor.

The Toyota MR2, or Midship Run-about Two-seater, is the brand’s first sports car to feature a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. The series aimed to provide a sports car that was fuel-efficient yet fun to drive experience, which by doing so made the MR2 Japan's Car of the Year in 1984. Premium models such as this AW11 also came equipped with the iconic 4A-GE engine shared by the famous AE86.
